Sub Zero might be a new name to some of you out there, but when we tell you that it’s actually one half of one of the dirtiest D&B duos ever unleashed on a dancefloor, we’re sure you’ll be excited about this latest release.

That’s right; Sub Zero is actually Jake from G Dub going for some solo studio action. Taking the lead on this disgusting 12” is 'Spin Doc', a gratifying look into the world of heavyweight dancefloor drum & bass with smashing beats and rinsing synths. Absolutely filthy!

Backing that up is 'Fever', something the ravers will be getting when they hear its skippy opening beats and old skool jungle edits. Wait for the drop though… oooouch! Descending bass bubbles and pounding drums part the way.

This is a hectic debut 12” from Sub Zero, don’t sleep!

By now you should all know the name ‘Spearhead’ well. They’ve released some of the hottest tracks and remixes around recently, including Blame’s immense remix of LAOS’ ‘We All’ which was battered on Radio 1 rather heavily.

Now label owner BCee finally steps up with a massive four track EP of his own. This man has been to Ibiza and back again, he’s worked with Ram Records new boy Lomax, he’s built Spearhead up from nothing to one of the most respected labels on the block, he’s even officially remixed Stretch & Vern’s mid ‘90s classic ‘I’m Alive’, and now he drops the ‘Generations’ EP just for you (well, you and the 1,000s of other Spearhead fans).

Every track on here is beautifully crafted, from Grooverider’s pick of the bunch ‘Diagnosis Murder’ featuring S.P.Y. to Fabio’s favourite, the Logistics remix of ‘Consumed’. An outstanding EP from BCee, a producer to be paying attention to this year.

On the A side 'Prisma' kicks off with a rolling break and snatches of melody, sweeping atmospherics herald the arrival of the breakdown and you’re awash with subtle keys and filtered strings. Get ready for the bass as the track drops with plenty of low end for your ribs and even more melodic goodness for your ears.

Flip over and 'Tomorrow’s Another Day' offers just as much in the way of musical goodness. Stepping drums and a rising hook are interspersed with synthetic arpeggios and heart warming bass. Throw in some choice vocal snippets and you’re onto a winner.

Anyone who keeps their ear to the drum & bass ground will know that the Serial Killaz hit the big time a few years back with a cheeky reworking of Rebel MC’s ‘Junglist’ on legendary jungle label Congo Natty.

Ever since then DJ Hype has been keeping his beady eye on them while rewinding their tracks at every opportunity and offering the duo plenty of support on his Kiss 100 radio show.

‘Mash You Down’ is the first release he’s snapped up for his infamous Ganja imprint and its irrepressible vocal makes the tune as the Killaz’ serious studio skills add a stepping break and sprinkled horn samples to great effect.

‘Live From Studio 1’ gets all dubbed out on the other side with rolling breakbeats and pounds of weighty bass. Undoubtedly not as instantly recognisable as the A side, but definitely no mere filler!

Original Sin has long been making music which decimates dancefloors the world over. But now his production has stepped over and above the majority of his peers and sees him join the ranks of TC, Chase & Status and even Pendulum. The proof of this outlandish statement can be heard on ‘Dr Feels Good’, the latest EP on Playaz, due for release on April 27^th, 2009.

Label owner, DJ Hype, has much to say on the subject of Original Sin and his latest EP:

“I really liked his early productions and could see a lot of potential in him. Now he has the capabilities to make all forms of drum and bass; everything from big dancefloor monsters to mellow rollers. His choice of sounds is very original and if you look at the younger producers out there you will find a lot of them are following what he does. I am very proud to have Original Sin as part of the Playaz camp.”

‘Dr Feels Good’ draws influences from modern electro house as much as it does mid ‘90s Metalheadz and blends them all up with as much gusto as you can squeeze onto a piece of 12” vinyl. With its slightly wonky piano lines and incredible vocal hook, backed up by some seriously powerful drums and bass, this track is the epitome of Original Sin’s new style.

However, the days of throwing an EP onto the shelves with one strong track and a trio of lame ducks are long gone. And so Original Sin has dug deep into his studio skill set to provide us with another three (rather awesome) pieces of music to round off this project.

‘8 Figure Bass’ revolves around your brain like a Scalextric car with its rib crushing bassline combinations and ear bursting beats. Straight up dancefloor drum & bass that takes no prisoners. Starting with a classic jungle break and a half time swagger leading up to one of the biggest drops this side of the Grand Canyon. Heavily featured on both Radio 1 and 1Xtra, this track is no mere B side.

Taking the lead on the second piece of wax is the incredible sound of ‘Overfiend’. Heading into those Metalheadz vibes once more, the intro on this piece is nothing short of epic and cements Original Sin as a producer with more than just the dancefloor in mind. Not that the dancefloor is let off lightly when the bass drops!

Last, but certainly not least, is another epic intro jam. Currently getting play from Kerrang! Radio amongst others, packed with Blade-Runner-esque musicality and Original Sin’s trademark pounding beats and grizzling basslines, 'Solar' rounds off the EP in style.

“I heavily road test all the tracks before they’re sent out to anyone else, so I was very confident that all the DJs would love it. Original Sin Biography

While some of you may not be 100% familiar with the name Original Sin, all will become clear when you realise that this is the new production alias of none other than Adam Tindall, one half of the undisputed kings of dancefloor drum & bass, G Dub.

Born and bred in Newcastle, Adam was initially drawn to D&B by albums such as the incredible ‘Platinum Breakz’ compilation from the Metalheadz camp, and Grooverider’s legendary ‘Prototype Years’. His love for the music grew and grew until the desire to become more actively involved in the scene took hold and he took up DJing shortly before enrolling himself at Music College.

It was at college that Adam met Jake Carter and the infamous Generation Dub was forged. However, it wasn’t long before the Adam realised that Music College was a pointless pursuit and he decided to quit in order to concentrate fully on making music at home. It wasn’t long before drum & bass legend DJ SS snapped up two of G Dub’s early productions for his Reformed imprint.

The successive deal with DJ Hype & Pascal’s Ganja imprint proved to be the making of the G Dub franchise, as Adam and Jake’s studio let off more anthems than an Olympic Games opening ceremony and tracks such as ‘Tink Ya Bad?’, ‘Warp Speed’ ‘Forever’ and ‘Beast City’ collectively smashed up more dancefloors than a specialist nightclub demolition team.

In early 2008 Adam and Jake parted company and Adam decided to pursue solo avenues under the name Original Sin. The ridiculously heavy ‘Don’t Be Silly’, ‘Cheater Cheater’, ‘D For Danger’ and his remixes of Shy FX’s classic Ebony Dubsters track ‘Rah’ and Rufige Kru’s ‘Monkey Boy’ have gone a long way to stamping his individual mark on the Drum & Bass scene.

Original Sin shows no signs of slowing down, though, as Adam prepares to drop the huge ‘Dr Feels Good’ EP on Playaz, showcasing a completely refined and mature sound which is as deadly on the dancefloor as it is on the radio.

There aren’t many artists who can claim to have changed the face of a genre of music, let alone to have changed that face more than once. Ed Rush, however, is an exception to that rule. Ever since his first production outings alongside his neighbour (and infamous owner of No U Turn Records), Nico Sykes, Ed Rush has consistently proven he has the ideas and attitude to transform drum & bass and is never afraid to push that infamous envelope.

Moving through the sounds of hip hop and electro in his early musical years, like many of his peers Ed Rush became fascinated with the burgeoning rave scene that was blowing up his hometown of London. The breakneck speed chopped breakbeats and piles of sub-low bass appealed greatly, and it wasn’t long before Ed Rush had convinced Nico to work on some tracks with him. The first result of their production partnership, of course, being the immense ‘Bludclot Artattack’, an out-and-out darkside jungle classic which marked a new era in hardcore, pushing the music into the realms of what we now know as drum & bass.

Hooking up with another legend of the drum & bass fraternity, DJ Trace, Ed Rush began to hone his style and it wasn’t long before a fresh sound reared its ugly head. Blasting out of the Ed Rush studio setup like a breakbeat bullet, ‘The Mutant’ became another classic track and was swiftly followed by ‘Guncheck’, an instantly recognisable Ed Rush piece packed full of attitude and bashy basslines.

Fully immersed in crafting a style which was to become known throughout the world as Techstep, Ed Rush’s rise to prominence was now inevitable. Releases on Grooverider’s Prototype imprint and Goldie’s Metalheadz all confirmed his place as one of the leading producers in the new school of drum & bass elite. Not only was he making great music, but he was continuing to break new ground with his ideas and production techniques; new ground which would forever change the sound of drum & bass.

However, as we all know, it was Ed Rush’s team up with another great musical mind, Optical, that unleashed upon the world an album, a label and an audiological echo that would inspire thousands of copycat producers and spawn an entire generation of artists who, even a decade later, would still strive to come close to that Virus sound.

Dropping their immense debut album, ‘Wormhole’, upon an unsuspecting scene, Ed Rush & Optical literally created an entirely new set of rules for succeeding in drum & bass: Take a set of tracks considered too edgy for the major players of the time, add your own label and a pinch of self determination and you end up with what is widely regarded as the best drum & bass LP of all time!

Ed Rush & Optical have since moved through three more critically acclaimed albums, ‘The Creeps’, ‘Original Doctor Shade’ and the incredible semi-live project ‘Chameleon’, all with their own individual styles and personalities. 2009 sees them tackle the release of their fifth long player, ‘Travel The Galaxy’ a project which promises an eagerly awaited injection of that classic Virus future funk with a blend of today’s production techniques that will prove hard to resist.

Craggz & Parallel News Feb '09

March sees the first release of the New Year for Craggz & Parallel Forces on their own Product Recordings imprint. And the boys are back with a vengeance! ‘Shake The Disease’ and ‘Magnetize’ make up the eighth release on Product and without a doubt showcases their best work since the release of their debut album ‘Northern Soul’ on Dillinja’s Valve Recordings. Both tracks have been receiving expected heavy DJ support form Goldie, D-Bridge and Marcus Intalex, to name but a few. Following on from this 12” will be the aptly named ‘Product Placement EP’ which will be hitting the shelves in spring 2009.

Both of these releases demonstrate a development in their sound taking in a more analogue based approach to their productions and stripping back some of the layers, while still maintaining the warmth and character they’ve became known for. This new direction and fresh perspective has inspired them to begin work on their second album which will be released on Product towards the end of the year.

“After releasing Northern Soul we felt we’d gone as far as we could with the sound we had developed. So rather than continue churning out tracks in the same mould which would have been easy, but ultimately soul destroying, we had to take a step back to re-assess where our music was going. In The past year we’ve seen a lot of refreshing developments in electronic music across the board which have inspired us and given us an exciting new direction for our next album.”

Craggz & Parallel Forces exploded onto the drum & bass scene in 2004 with their inimitable dancefloor anthem ‘Fizzy Piglets’, since then their output has been a steady succession of club killing bangers with a touch of musicality about them. Their debut album on Dillinja’s infamous Valve Recordings imprint was received with widespread critical acclaim and saw the boys take their production to a whole new level, incorporating an awesome live show into the murky world of drum & bass performance.

This year however sees the boys head back to their drum & bass roots, abandoning the crossover style that has seen them get so much attention and stripping back the layers to reveal a sleeker, more streamlined Craggz & Parallel sound.

The first release to feature their new outlook is an incredible beauty-and-the-beast affair ‘Shake The Disease’ a track which has been getting Goldie and Marcus Intalex hot under their respective collars with its futuristic throw down of earth shattering grimey beats and bass mingled with spine tingling melodic flourishes.

On the flip side ‘Magnetize’ takes you to an entirely different place. Drawing upon minimal techno influences and creating an eerie electronic soundscape to compliment the stripped back production giving this track a truly unique identity.

Happy New Year from Unique Artists

Hello all and welcome to the first update of 2009 from Unique Artists. First of all we want to say a big thank you to all the promoters who’ve booked and supported our DJs throughout 2008 and to all the party-goers who’ve attended the events, thanks to you our artists had a great year and played some of the hottest parties across the globe.

2009 is shaping up to be an even bigger year for the Unique family. So we thought it would be appropriate to recap on the year that’s passed and to give you a taster of what our artists are up to in the coming months.

Unique Welcomes Ryme Tyme!

That's right! (or should that be Ryte? ...hmm, maybe not) A great way to kick off 2009, Unique Artists is proud to announce the addition of legendary MC Ryme Tyme to its roster. Having built his name as the voice of some of the scene's filthiest dancefloor anthems, as well as knocking out plenty of audio dirt from his own studio, Ryme Tyme is one of the underground's most popular names and has all the skills to lyrically smash up drum & bass dancefloors.

BCUK (Maldini & Vegas)

The legendary BCUK duo of Maldini & Vegas had a hugely busy year in 2008, rocking dancefloors from London to Los Angeles with their distinctive blend of future funk. Keeping their output minimal on the production tip, with Maldini teaming up with The Upbeats for a release on their new label, Non Vogue, called ‘The Bends’, a tearing piece of filth that tore up the place wherever it was dropped, BCUK have got a whole heap of tunes backing up and ready to be unleashed in 2009! This year will see the release of the 'Bullet Time' remix EP, featuring Spor and Upbeats remixes of 'Bullet Time' as well as two original tracks from Maldini & Vegas, 'Arkline' and 'Oceanic', and their forthcoming collab with Prolix, currently slated for release on Ganja-Tek. Cabbie

Cabbie literally exploded onto the drum & bass scene in 2008, with over 20 of his bass-fuelled tracks seeing release on vinyl, and two being included on the brand new Chronic album, ‘Big Bad & Heavy’. As well as his music getting a whole heap of the biggest names on the circuit buzzing, Cabbie has become known as a highly respectable DJ in his own right, and thanks to his skills was asked by Dogs on Acid to drop a mix for them (check it here). The coming year looks to be even bigger for Cabbie, with tracks already slated for release on DJ Hype’s Ganja imprint, Digital’s Timeless and a host of the scene’s hottest underground labels.

Having had her busiest year yet, DJ Empress is still proving herself to be one of the world’s premier female DJs. Keeping herself locked in the studio, when not holding down her immensely busy DJ schedule, Empress has been gearing up for 2009 in fine style. The first fruit of her labours has already been snapped up for the infamous Renegade Hardware imprint, and if Empress’ hard work and dedication is anything to go by then this year is going to be huge for everyone’s favourite drum & bass femme fatale.

J Majik

With Breakbeat Kaos picking up the ‘Crazy World’ album for re-release, and Ministry of Sound offshoot Data releasing the title track with a host of new remixes, 2008 was clearly a big year for J Majik. With scores of new material on the way, including a huge reworking of The Egg’s ‘Walking Away’ that’ll have the dancefloors and the radio buzzing, it’s plain to see that J Majik is going to be just as prominent in ’09 as he has been for the last decade! Not to forget a rumoured solo album in the works, we envisage plenty of quality music from this man’s studio this year.

In 1992 there was one track on the lips of every raver who heard it. ‘Music Takes You’ was the start of a long and illustrious career for Conrad Shafie, otherwise known to the world as Blame, and in the summer of 2008 he proved he still has what it takes to craft music that gets the world talking.

‘Stay Forever’ released through Charge Recordings was an energetic musical drum & bass hit which garnered massive support from BBC Radio 1 and shot straight into the underground sales charts. And following swiftly in its footsteps is ‘Because of You’ once again featuring the vocal talents of Selah.

Dropping in February on Blame’s own 720 Degrees Music imprint, this release is already battering down clubs across the globe and burning a path on BBC Radio 1, with Zane proclaiming ‘Because of You’ the “hottest record in the world”.

And no wonder with its soaring strings and skipping breakbeat combination all topped off with Selah’s emotive vocals. On the flip Annie Mac’s favourite, ‘Bring Me Down’ is no Christmas turkey either, synthetic washes and rave stabs are the order of the day. Hotter than dropping mulled wine in your lap.
